Cynthia Truitt Lynch

Father’s Day

Today, while I am shopping I see an elderly man
shuffle his feet; his weighted hands push the cart. To the left,
are cards. The display beckons
and wishes explode out of the folds—I open and close.

Cupping fingers at my temples,
I secure my head. Allow my hair to extend
over my cheeks. I stand in the aisle one last time.

Cynthia Truitt Lynch is a graduate of Hamline University’s MFA program, Her work has been published in Murphy Square and Open to Interpretation: Water’s Edge. She lives in Saint Paul, Minnesota with her husband, son and periodically patient dog.
